Varsity Match Report
This match was one of the best matches that we've competed in all year. But we lost. And that loss stings.
Not because the Knights didn't deserve it - no, they played awesome. At #1S, I believe Jacob Woolace played by far his most impressive tennis, and lost 6-1, 6-1. And at #2S, Marian junior Josh Bussan rarely made mistakes in wrapping up a victory over Liam. Even at positions where they lost, the Knights looked well prepared and changed strategy mid-match to keep pace. At #3S, where Caleb Shenk had locked up the first set at 6-0 for us, Marian's Caleb Suarez adjusted to try to get everything in the court and it made the second set run a little closer.
The loss stings because we were so close. And that feeling (for me) is getting a little old.
In the end, the match came down to #1D, which went into a third set (which is also getting old, by the way :-) We've had 6 dual matches, and every one of them has had one varsity match go to three sets. And tonight, it decided the match. We came out firing in the 3rd set, taking a 3-1 lead behind Dustin's confident forehands and net putaways and Jonathon's cagey service games and consistency. But soon, we got a little tight. We had a chance to take a 4-1 lead, but a short lob and overhead for the Knights ignited them and propelled them into a run of 5 straight games to take the third set. In those games, we got a little tentative and a little fearful. But we are learning. It was a difficult match.
But this makes 3 straight 3-2 losses. And Northridge was 3-2. And even our 4-1 defeats have been closer than the score indicated. We just can't seem to find the one thing to flip us out on the winning side.
So, I have to step back and remind myself to take a deep breath. We knew going into this season that we were going to have to work hard to get wins. We are improving, that was seen across the board tonight. So now, we got back to the practice court on Wednesday and we improve some more. We keep working to build an attitude of gratitude - which I'll cover more in the "Climbing Up" section.
And so, I'll just say thank You, God, for these guys who are working hard to leave a positive legacy on Bethany Christian tennis. What they've done may not be seen by everyone, but I appreciate the confidence and energy with which they conduct themselves. I pray that You give us eyes to see all the moments of joy, the twinkling of beauty, and the love of our brothers.
Good match everyone, way to show some grit.
JV Match Report
In all matches except for Joel's, the JV match was fairly straightforward. We won most of the matches easily, and I was impressed by the play of several of the players. First of all, Will Nisley. Will was not moving when I first walked up to the fence to speak with him. He was taking long, slow steps around the court. I encouraged him to make the match go quickly by taking quick steps. The next thing I knew, he was walking off the courts with an 8-0 victory. Moving is THE KEY to getting better, and Will began to do it.
Another impressive player was Aaron Shenk. He's been shaky with his confidence throughout the early season, but in this match he looked very solid and dependable. His serves had some weight behind them and his groundstrokes looked smoother and cleaner. It was fun to watch he and Chris as they've both been players who dramatically improved in each season.
Other matches, I didn't get to see as much of. Braden Bohn completed an 8-0 set quickly. Braydon and Philip served well in their match. In fact, I saw several aces :-)
Speaking of aces, Joel Yoder told me that he had several in his match. That was one of the highlights for him. But, he didn't end up winning. He didn't end up winning because he lacked a finishing touch to end points. Each tennis player, to move up and become a consistent winner at a higher JV or varsity level needs to develop two things:
1. MOVEMENT
2. WEAPONS
What I mean by weapons are ways to end points. This could be coming forward to the net to putaway volleys and overheads. This can be a strong winning shot that we blast through the open courts. This might be a heavy topspin deep ball that you can consistently drive from corner to corner. But to be good players, we have to develop these with consistency!
Climbing Up (Great Moments of the Match)
Normally, I do the moments that were emblematic of what I want to see this team become, but today I want us to be grateful. Here are the things I am grateful for.
1st Rung - I'm grateful that Caleb is starting to play like himself again. His injury really bummed me out, because he was playing so well at the beginning of the season. I'm thankful that he's able to move and be more healthy.
2nd Rung - I'm grateful to see tangible ways that we are getting better. Jacob Woolace is competing in points with HIGH level players, and he's able to bring some aggression to these points. Nathan is starting to show confidence in his net putaways. Braden is beginning to find consistency in his serve. And we could go on...
3rd Rung - I'm so grateful for the beautiful day we had to play tennis. Last year, there were many days in which we were wondering whether we would play or not. This year has been gorgeous. Now, God, I pray that continues through September!
4th Rung - I'm grateful for listeners. Yesterday, lot's of people listened and tried when I coached them. That makes for growth. People who don't listen just stay on their same trajectory, they don't get better. Yesterday, Will, Dustin, Jonathon, Caleb, Braden, Joel, and Jacob all had moments where I remember them listening, trying and succeeding. I am so thankful for that!
5th Rung - I am grateful for the support we have of each other. After Dustin and Jonathon lost, Dustin was feeling down and sitting on the bench, exhausted, as we headed toward the bus. Two players came over to me and specifically told me that they would stay behind and walk with Dustin, to make sure he knew they were there for him. We are there for each, and I'm thankful.

Varsity Match Reports
After playing some of the better teams in northern Indiana to start this season, what I really appreciated about the Western Invitational was that we were able to play some "normal" teams. These are teams with strengths and flaws. These are teams that have strong positions and weak positions. These are teams juggling their lineups a bit to find out what works. These are teams in the learning process of tennis.
In other words, these are teams like us.
And that gives me some good perspective on the season. Playing Concord, Jimtown, Northridge, Angola, Goshen - many of those matches give us a glimpse of what is much higher up the ladder. Playing Lebanon, Western and LCC gave us a chance to see how to take the next step.
We started out play with Western. My brother coaches their team, and I knew from the beginning that he was going to be missing his #1S player, a perennial All-District player and last year a 2nd team All-State selection. He was taking his SAT. Western was also missing half of their #1D's team at the test, while we were missing Joel Yoder.
So, with some switched around lineups, we started out very strong. Liam secured our first point of the match, playing a fairly evenly matched opponent but really stroking his forehand strong and well. I loved seeing his attitude and belief. Jonathon Yousey followed Liam off the court with a win, playing his style of controlled aggression. We quickly had two points from the top two positions and needed only one more.
Caleb Shenk, playing his first match back from a back injury, provided that third match. I loved his energy and determination - getting through a tight first set and then sailing through the second set as he got more comfortable. His win gave us the team win, even though the doubles had yet to finish up.
But the doubles both found ways to win as well. Jacob and Dustin played an excellent match. In the first set, they had gotten to a tiebreak even though they were playing very tentative tennis. In fact, they had a set point at 6-5 in the tiebreak. Unfortunately, a close call so Dustin's return float long and they went on to lose the set. In beginning the second, I told them to go for their shots early to begin to loosen up. They did. And the second set was not as close. They played much more aggressive and were able to break serve more often to win 6-3. The third set at tournaments is always a super tiebreak, and so they completed their victory in this match with a 10-5 tiebreak win.
#2D also got a tiebreak, and also made a comeback. But their comeback was more emotional than score related. They won their first set and then played an awful second set. They were angry at themselves and feeling pretty down entering the tiebreak. But they reset their emotions and tried to get excited rather than angry. It worked, their level went up and they won a 10-8 decision in the third.
So we beat Western 5-0, and our second match in the round robin tournament was against Lebanon. It so happened that they won their first match as well, eeking out a 3-2 decision over Lafayette Central Catholic. This Lebanon match started out well for us too. Liam cruised through his #2S match, again relying on consistent forehands and deep shots. #1D also cruised to victory, looking very good in the process I must say. Dustin had found an aggressive groove in the first match, and Jonathon was feeling good from his singles victory. So we won the first two matches and were up 2-0. As our last three matches took the court, we only needed one more - and we would win the tournament.
Unfortunately, that didn't happen. Jacob Woolace ran into another great player at #1S (which pretty much always happens, #1S is a tough position :-) He fought so hard and played so great, but again was on the lopsided end of the score card. Will Nisley got his first varsity match, and he worked hard but couldn't find the finishing stroke in long points at #3S. So that meant the match came down to #2D.
Jonah and Nathan played a good match, they hung in there and competed... but they also couldn't find the finishing stroke. One of the Lebanon players was constantly hunting at the net, and the consistently good volleys from the Tiger team hurt us time and time again. Every time we mounted a rally and got some positive momentum, they would track down a volley and finish the point.
So, with a 3-2 victory the Tiger's were guaranteed first place. And so we finished out the round robin against Lafayette Central Catholic to determine second and third. And we worked and worked and worked, but we just couldn't secure a singles position. All the matches were fairly even, but we were tiring and getting frustrated as the day moved along. The doubles matches were pretty easily in our favor, which was really fun to watch. But we lost this match 3-2 as well.
So, 3rd place in the tournament, but we brought home another win. In the "Climbing Up" section, I'll talk about the things that we need to learn to continue to reach the next rung. But I have to say that I loved how the day ended, as we sat as a team watching Nathan and Jonah wrap up a victory over the #2D's of LCC. We joked, laughed, snacked, took videos and cheered for our brothers. We had made a good day's work, left our best on the court, and were ready to just enjoy each other's company.
That's what I always ask for. Praise God that we were able to get there. And praise God for no more injuries... that's already been too much of the season :-)

Climbing Up (Great Moments of the Matches)
For the rungs in this match, I want to put forth the three things this team needs to do to improve in this season, and some glimpses where I saw this is the matches.
1st Rung - Footwork is the cost of a good shot.
When Liam moves, he is a fantastic player. In his first match against Western, he was really getting forward to balls that fell shorter in the court. In fact, if these ball came to his forehand, he was often able to hit winners. As he got more tired, he began to try to "flick" the ball more, reaching forward and twisting his wrist. These balls went in the net. Footwork is the cost of a good shot. In the Western match, coming forward, Liam blistered passing shots past a bewildered opponent. Movement created that, and it was good. That's our first step.
2nd Rung - Using our whole body to create consistent shots.
Even though footwork puts us in position, we can sometimes still flail at shots with just our arm. This is what was happening to Jacob Woolace in his first doubles match against Western. He would get in good position to hit a return, and then just try to "arm" it over. And the ball kept spinning into the net. Using the special coaching rule at tournaments this year, I encouraged him to use his body. On the next return, he turned his hips with the return. Even though it was a bit of a mishit, it went over and he and Dustin won the point. At deuce, his next service return he turned on a backhand and crushed it down the line. In fact, he rarely struggled with return after this. That's because he learned to use his body to help his arm in returning serve.
3rd Rung - Spend time improving specific weaknesses.
This didn't happen at the match, but I've noticed it this week. Joel Yoder is getting a lot better at his serve. That's because he spends time after practice hitting 100 serves. A big part of climbing up this ladder and getting better is spending focused time on something. If you struggle with your backhand, 100 backhands a day is really going to help. Ditto for volleys, overheads, serves, powerful approach shots... whatever. I challenge you to go above and beyond in whatever area you struggled with on Saturday and start putting in some extra time. Practices are ending at 5:30, so I encourage us to be motivated. Don't you worry I've got practice plans for you.
4th Rung - "Every breath in is gratitude, every breath out gets rid of our fear."
To me, this is near the top of the ladder for Bethany Christian tennis. How to mentally prepare for every point. Three years ago, this was our theme. I keep coming back to it as a way of describing what we need to do between every match, set, game and point. We got too tired and frustrated in our last singles matches on Saturday. We lost hope at some points. Let us instead come to each point with gratitude for being there, and let that gratitude and love drive out our fear.

Varsity Match Report
Tonight's match was a nervy one for me. Going into the match, I knew how good Fremont's #1S was. He had competed well with Byeong last year, and had clearly improved during the offseason. He really is a great example of what it looks like when an athletic guy decides to play some serious tennis.
But, I also knew that we'd have a fairly certain point at #1D. Dustin and Jonathon have been playing great, and Fremont's #1D were all new players from last year. But this meant that the match was really about 3 positions, and we needed to win 2 of them.
Fremont's #2D did have one player returning from the varsity squad last year, but despite this Jonah and Nathan were able to get out to a fairly good start. They kept a comfortable lead through most of the first set, but then turned it up even more in the second set. They relaxed, which cut down on their errors, and really began to play some good tennis.
As predicted, Evan Trusty cruised at #1S. Jacob actually played one of his best matches, serving and striking the ball well. He kept most of the games close but on the big points, Trusty had an answer for almost every shot. I remember a point where Jacob served Trusty off the court on the forehand side, nailed the next shot into the back, and then dropped a volley back to the forehand side - and Trusty ran them all down to end the point with a beautiful topspin passing shot.
At #1D, we won as predicted. Which meant the match came down to #2S and #3S... and Joel wasn't on his game. In the first set, Joel struggled mightily with consistency. To which I reminded him (as always) that if we are out of position when we try to hit big shots, we will miss. And to Joel's credit, he took the advice to heart. In the second set, he was very competitive. He controlled the points for the most part and the set went back and forth - mostly decided by who would make the last error. Unfortunately, Joel fell in the second set at 4-6.
But Liam was still alive in his #2S match. Having played great tennis in a tense first set, Liam had lost the second and was losing a little focus to start the 3rd set. Down 2-0, his opponent made a couple of errors that game Liam some life, and Liam was able to get some positive momentum and come back in the third set to 2-2. From there on, it was all trading of games. At first, every time that a player took the lead with strong aggressive shots, they would follow it up with poor, timid shots and lose the next game. But by the end of the set, both players had realized that they needed to hit deep, aggressive balls in order to win the match. Fremont's Thayne Camp ripped forehands and rushed the net, playing to his strengths. Meanwhile, Liam hit passing shots and lofted up lobs, just inches over the athletic Camp's racket.
This turn of play sent the third set into a tiebreak, with the varsity team score tied at 2-2. Whoever won the tiebreak, won the match. Camp began the tiebreak strong, with several volleys and an overhead to take a 2-0 lead. But Liam responded, with some sick crosscourt forehands and passing shots to win four straight points. Camp fought back with his strengths, and tied the tiebreak at 5-5. Then Liam blistered a forehand spinner into Camp's backhand and set up a match point. But Camp responded well, charging the net to hit an overhead slam.
backhands losing speed and lots of groundstrokes. Finally, Camp ripped a forehand into Liam's backhand that Liam could barely reach. Liam sprinted and stretched a dipped the backhand just over the net. Having to adjust down to the falling ball cause Camp to pull his forehand volley just wide. On the next point, Liam's second match point, Camp again approached to Liam's backhand. With his feet more set this time, Liam aimed a lob for the backhand corner near the baseline. Camp backpedaled but couldn't get solid contact and his leaping backhand volley fell in front of the net.
Our crowd cheered and Liam looked like nothing had happened. He was tired from a long, emotional match. But our guys slapped him on the back and sang Sarasponda (our victory song) with enthusiasm. It was great to see Liam play his best tennis under pressure. It was great to celebrate.
JV Match Report
Only one match to report on, as Fremont only had two JV players. But Braydon and Philip played a
solid match to provide the first JV victory of the season. One thing that I was excited to see in this match was the solid shots that we were hitting. Doubles, as I've tried to emphasize throughout the season, is about simple aggression.
A better way of defining this is that in doubles we should take simple shots to aggressive spots. And aggressive spots are ones the put pressure on the other team to make choices and to make shots. So that means putting the ball into the open court and coming to the net, or volleying the ball deep and in between our opponents, or even putting up a lob and attacking the net.
Braydon and Philip did these things in most of the match. Each time I looked down the courts, I saw that easy backhand slice from Braydon or Philip hitting a forehand with forward momentum. And tonight, that was enough to seal the win.
Climbing Up (Great Moments of the Match)
For the most part, we'll be having 5 different great moments of the match. Tonight, just 3 because there was only 1 JV match. As we go up, these moments will more and more exemplify what I hope our team will be like.
1st Rung - Taking care of business. In two matches tonight, one opponent was clearly better than the other. In #1S, Evan Trusty was clearly a much more advanced player than Jacob. In #1D, Dustin and Jonathon held that distinction. But what I liked is that both of those positions just went out and played hard tennis. They hit their shots, didn't goof around, and had respect for their opponents. In some matches, the position is a mismatch. I like to see players just focus on their tennis and play their best.
2nd Rung - Listening skills. It became pretty obvious early in this match that it would come down to whether we could win #2 or #3 singles. So, I spent most of my fence visits at those two positions. What I really was struck by was how well Joel and Liam listened. The things that I suggested, they tried to do. I italicize try, because sometimes it didn't work out. But I told Liam to be more aggressive earlier in the points in his third set, and he did. I told Joel to move quicker, to play through the middle of the court, to not try and make winners when he was clearly out of position - and he did. I appreciate this type of coaching relationship, and the trust that it shows you have in me. And then I get to have trust right back at you, like when I knew that Liam could pull out his match :-)
3rd Rung - Team support. Probably my favorite moment of the night was when Braydon came up to me while Liam was playing his final point of the match and asked if we could rush the court if Liam won. Braydon was obviously excited for Liam and for the team, and when Liam won and the team roared... well, that made me proud of you guys too! I love to watch the team unite, in good and in bad. It's always fun when it gets to be the good that we're celebrating, and tonight that was the case. But let's make sure to get more and more of this vocal support even in the day to day matches. Let's hear encouragement and praise in all things. And let's not forget to lift that to God as well, who is healing this team day by day.
Final Notes
This tennis season continues to be one of trials. We've had ongoing injuries, frustrations and now are battling through a freshman wave of sickness. Tonight was fun, but please, remember to take what's going on to God.
God, our prayer is that You would form us as people moving toward You. We've got many loose ends and problems, but we want to move up the ladder with You. Give us grace when we lose our temper, give us health for our sick places, give us healing for our hurts. And then, to You be the glory, in the name of Jesus. Amen!

Varsity Match Report
I got the sense that on Tuesday night as our varsity entered this match, we were loose and focused. We'd had a decent practice on Monday night and were ready to go against a team who ranks among the state's top 30.
But I was so pleased at the grit the team showed in this match, the way we kept our heads up and kept working - kept believing. In #1 singles, Jacob Woolace took on Will Boyer. As a team, we've never got a win over Boyer, meaning that our 2 time All-District and all time win leader Byeong Min Lim never beat him. It was a tall challenge for Jacob, but he took a great attitude into the match. In the first game, Jacob got to see the power that Boyer packs in his shots. And soon he got to see the brilliant way that Boyer uses his whole body to create a smooth and snappy serve. But Jacob got down to business trying to figure out how he could attack, how he could move Boyer. That's an attitude that leads to improvement.
And that was the attitude across the courts, although at other positions we weren't quite as overmatched. Liam didn't play the best first set, and actually trailed 1-4 in the second. But instead of getting angry, he got focused and pulled back into the set at 3-4. Joel got down 1-4 in his first set but was able to take the set to the wire by recovering to 4-5. #2 doubles of Jonah and Nathan stumbled out of the gate to a 0-4 deficit. After losing the first set, they cruised to a 5-0 lead in the second. Then they lost 6 straight games to trail 6-5, but kept their heads and stayed aggressive. They sent the second set to a tiebreak, which they won.
In all of these matches, we faced adversity. In all these matches, we held our nerve and played through the adversity. Another great example of that came at #1 doubles. After winning the first set and holding a 5-3 advantage in the second set, Jonathon and Dustin found themselves trailing 6-2 in a second set tiebreak. With 4 set points against them (set up by a couple of flubbed volleys in the net), they could have gotten angry, sad, sullen, or pouty. Instead, they focused their energy on hitting good returns. Point after point they crawled back into the match, and when Dustin's forehand volley split the Minutemen partners for the 8th point of the tiebreak, they had won 6 straight points to take the tiebreak 8-6 and win the match.
These sorts of comebacks are exciting, and it tells me that our mental focus is in the right place. We can do it! And for that I am extremely proud.
Now, with our foot firmly planted on this lower rung, we look to climb up. The next step is the right mental and physical routine between every point. We have to return to positive energy, our "words," and our body language all the time, not just when things start going well. That will help us play at our best at all times.
Who's willing to do that? We showed some grit now I hope we're all ready to climb on up!
JV Match Report
I wasn't present for the JV match, but I heard a little report. It seems like in general we didn't play our best. I don't know why that is, we played fairly good matches last time we played, but we won't make excuses. We won't look for reasons. We'll get back to the practice court and hit a lot of balls. We won't talk about sore ankles, lack of water, difficult partners, feeling tired - or any of the myriad of things I hear when I ask how it went. Instead, we'll talk about these things...
1. We're going to start moving our feet through out the match. Not just in the points but even between them.
2. We're going to start getting to the ball at the perfect strike zone.
--> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbwbpta1Bxw
3. We're going to start using our whole body together to create easy power and simple shots.
--> https://youtu.be/yQRmHsHgrRI
4. We're going to forgive ourselves for our mistakes, because even the best tennis players make them.
Climbing Up (Great Moments of the Match)
For the most part, we'll be having 5 different great moments of the match. Tonight, just 3 because it was only the varsity match that I got to see. As we go up, these moments will more and more exemplify what I hope our team will be like.
1st Rung - Stay alert. I loved a lot about our #1D match. The comeback in the tiebreak was really cool to watch, but my favorite point was in the first set. Dustin was up at the net and Jonathon was back. When Jonathon's lob fell a bit shorter than expected, Dustin scooted back toward the service line and had the ball overheaded at him. With quick hands, he flicked the ball up over the net player's head, but not out of reach. Frustrated that his overhead was retrieved, the Concord player slammed it toward Dustin again. Instead of turning backward, Dustin's alert reactions flicked the ball up and completely over the net player this time, landing between the stunned Minutemen for a winner.
2nd Rung - Expect to win. Jacob Woolace came out for his match completely un-intimidated. The first point of the match, Jacob got a good first serve and got down and hit a great passing shot that forced Will Boyer's backhand volley to sail long. On the second point, Jacob stayed confident. After a second serve curved into Boyer's backhand, Jacob anticipated early a cross court return and moved his feet to get a forehand. Taking the ball inside-in, his hit a controlled and still powerful shot down the line for a forehand winner. These two points to start the match showed that Jacob was there to compete, not just flail around.
3rd Rung - Stay in it. Tonight, I could sing the praises of many people who "stayed in." This means that they kept fighting even when they weren't playing well. My favorite examples however were Liam coming back in the second set. It made me so proud because he made a decision to stay with his game, and not just quit and start pounding the ball. Also, Jonah and Nathan had a 5-0 lead in the second set and then had to go to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, they faced 4 match points that could have sealed the match for Concord. Each time, they played poised and loose. The combination ended up giving them a set point, and they won an incredible tiebreak 13-11.

Legacy #03 - Vulnerable Love
Jesus is God with us, come to show us God's love...
In our devotional segments so far, we've seen that Jesus was God who descended down the ladder to us. Then, together with us, Jesus asked us to climb up. To move more towards God.
Then, we also saw that as Jesus climbs with us, His love never leaves us. He won't turn away, because Jesus shows us the gritty love of God. It's love that gets into all the details of our lives - the shame, the regrets, the doubts, the insecurities - and still remains 100% committed to our worth and value.
But Jesus also shows us something else about God's love. God's love is willing to be injured for us.
--------------------------------------
Injuries. Ugh. Just typing the word makes me shudder. This tennis season, we have endured some injuries. We've had back ailments, shoulder soreness, abdominal strains, twisted ankles, and just plain old sore feet. We've had a total of 1 retirement, 5 missed matches, and oodles of trips to the trainer.
What's going on?
Well, we are carrying a big load. Physically, this season has been much more taxing on our bodies because many players are stepping up from JV roles last season to the varsity this year. This means more movement, trying to our serves harder, absorbing the impact of heavier and stronger shots from our opponents and the stress of not wanting to let anybody down.
And when we shoulder that load alone, we get injured.
--------------------------------------
Maybe the hardest thing to carry through a season is the mental anxiety. Maybe that's the hardest thing to carry through life. Over and over again, we bump up against ours fears and failures and we just hammer ourselves with them.
"Maybe I won't make the varsity this year."
"I can't believe I lost a match where I won the first set so easily."
"I don't feel like I'm understanding the mentality of the team."
"I've worked so hard and I still get nervous every time I have to hit a backhand."
And then we throw in some why questions...
"Why don't I ever get any better?"
"Why don't my teammates seem to like me?"
"Why did I have to be put in the position that we need to win the match?"
"Why don't I understand how to change?"
And then we feel terrible.
And we often take it out on someone. Sometimes ourselves, which deepens the problem. Sometimes we get frustrated with others, which causes a new stressor to pop up. Sometimes we take it out on God, wondering how God could bring us into such a hard situation. Or wondering why God won't just take this situation away.
Yet, all over the Bible, God seems to be okay with us "taking it out" on God.
--------------------------------------
Here's what I mean... God's love is big enough that it can take our open frustration against it. God's love can handle our frustration about others. God's love can handle our fears and our failures. God's love can handle anything that we try to nail to it.
On the cross, Jesus shows us the perfect example of God's love. There, Jesus swallows up all the sin, all the brokenness of the world and offers to suffer its pain. In Job, God hears all of Job's complaints and is doesn't suggest that Job was right, but is glad that Job honestly talked it out with him. In the psalms of lament or the book of Lamentations, God hears the complaints of the people and responds with "mercies that are new every morning." Before the cross, Jesus is even hesitant to bear the cup of pain coming up to him, and God sends strength.
Sometimes, we just need to honestly pray. To let down our guards, and tell God how we feel. God's love is big enough to handle pain, frustration, fear, anger, and so much more. It is willing to suffer the injury for us, to carry the load with us, before we become overwhelmed.
God is willing to suffer for us.
--------------------------------------
So what am I suggesting. Well, plain and simple, I'm suggesting you take time right now and offer an honest prayer. Maybe that prayer is full of fear and pain. Maybe an honest prayer is full of hope and joy. Maybe an honest prayer is in worry for someone else, maybe it is grateful, maybe it is angry. Whatever it is, take five minutes to tell God what is going on in your life.
What is injuring you?
What is filling you up with joy?
What is keeping you up at night?
What is it that you really want?
Let Jesus bear that with you. And know that we love you too. We are committed to your worth, your indescribable value, and we want to climb up this ladder together toward God.

Climbing Report 3: Goshen
Links
Varsity Match Report
In many of our matches, we get so concerned about winning or losing. As we try to be leaders, as we try to learn and climb up the ladder, I want to focus on these lessons instead of the wins or losses. So, here's the lessons from each match.
#1S - The way to deal with nerves is to swing through the ball.
#2S - Movement is key to competing.
What was super cool about watching this match was that even though it was Philip's first varsity match of the season, he definitely had the strokes to compete in this match. But Simon Myers, Goshen's #2, is a very gifted mover. He has good strokes, but he gets around the court quickly. As a result, Myers was rarely hitting the ball from a bad position. He was balanced and able to take intentional swings to targets. Usually the player who is hitting through the ball in their strike zone more often wins the match. That was the case here. In order to move up the ladder, we have to find ways to get more balls in our strike zone... and movement is the beginning of that.
#3S - Each point has its own consequences.
Joel hit some wonderful shots tonight. He also hit some bad ones. In talking after the match, Joel admitted that he cannot turn off the feedback loop in his own head after his bad shots, and that if someone would yell, "It's alright, Joel!" after a bad shot it would make him more upset. I totally get that. But the truth is that it is alright. We tend to beat ourselves up for bad shots. We get upset and mad at ourselves. But the bad shot already had it's consequence - we lost the point. It is not helpful nor necessary to continue to be mad at ourselves. We have to come back to a focus for the next point.
#1D - Making things simpler makes them better.
This match went back and forth and back and forth, in fact, I don't think that either team ever led by more than a game except when Dustin and Jacob won the first set. What the match usually swung back and forth on was the complexity of the shots that we were trying to hit, especially with volleys. The key thing to remember with volleys is that you are simply trying to guide them to the area of the court that gives you the best advantage. Most of the time, that's right to the open court, between your two opponents, or towards the feet of the net man. When Dustin and Jacob stayed ready to hit volleys out like that, they won a high percentage of the points. When they tried to hit the volleys down into the court for putaways, they began to lose. This simplicity carried over to groundstrokes too. When we swung big from bad positions, bad things happened. When we got into good positions, well... we talked about that in #2S above :-)
#2D - Push into each challenge.
At this position, there was one player who was clearly better than everyone else. And he hit the ball h.a.r.d. This knocked Nathan and Jonah back on their heals a little bit as they tried to compete. Mentally, they found it hard to keep their energy. I would point out to them the lesson from #3S, that the reward for their opponent hitting a good hard shot is that they won the point, and that we should move onto the next point with a new focus. But also, we should be sure to learn that when someone hits the ball harder than us, or moves better, or has a better serve... we should see that as an awesome challenge - almost like a riddle. Then, we do whatever we can to relish that and come back against it. Almost like, "Okay... (high voice squeak) I see you... well, watch what I'm going to do back." Have fun with the challenge, have fun with yourself as you find a way to take it on.
I didn't get to see any of the JV matches, but I got to hear about them in a big jumble as the guys rolled off the bus back at Bethany to come eat with the varsity. What I gathered is that we had some incredibly fun matches, where we started down and made comebacks, or went back and forth the whole time, or grabbed our first win. I was really glad to hear the joy in the guys voices, to see them eat and run out onto the tennis court. I'm disappointed when I don't get to see everyone play, but I love to hear your excitement.
In the end, it seems that it came down to one final tiebreak, and if Aaron and Angel had won it, we would have had a 5-3 victory. It seems that the Double A's were a little nervous, and came out on the losing side. Perhaps this is a lesson that they could also learn from what I wrote about the #1S varsity match, making sure that in a nervous situation, we are always coming back to the same focus.
I'm proud of the guys that competed so well though. Like I said on the Instagram post, I like you all so much that I'm ready to celebrate some team victories together.
Climbing Up (Great Moments of the Match)
For the most part, we'll be having 5 different great moments of the match. Tonight, just 3 because it was only the varsity match that I got to see. As we go up, these moments will more and more exemplify what I hope our team will be like.
1st Rung - Drop volley. Jonathon Yousey had several awesome shots last night, but one of my favorite was when he made Wes Beck run wide to hit a forehand and came forward to the net. When Beck hit a stinging forehand passing shot, Jonathon looked out of position. But quick footwork moved him out of the way, and he got right on top of the net to brush the ball with his racket. It tumbled to the other side, barely a foot from the net and Beck had to just watch as he knew he couldn't get there. Great movement, great decision and great execution.
2nd Rung - Simple placement. I loved Dustin Miller's volleys tonight, so often he would simply guide the ball to a part of the court where the other team was not at. One time, the Goshen net player started for the middle of the net and Dustin slowly poked a volley down the line. The Goshen player strained to get back, but couldn't. The ball landed NOT on the doubles sideline, but almost on the singles sideline - plenty of room to spare before being out. It was a great shot.
3rd Rung - Never give up. Probably my favorite point of the night was Jacob Woolace. Jacob recently admitted to me that his favorite drill is the "Grit" drill, where we run to get difficult balls. Well, tonight he showed us why we do that. Diego Torres of Goshen's #1D got a simple forehand volley, and hit an extreme angle from right to left through the court and off of the deuce side where Jacob had served from. Jacob took off at a full spring toward Jonathon Yousey's court and it looked like he had no chance to get the ball. So much so that Goshen's other net player turned toward Torres to celebrate the point. But Jacob strained on. Reaching out he lifted the ball down the line, behind the head of the Goshen net player who never saw the ball until it landed in the corner behind him, in the court for a winner. The positive momentum of that point spurred Dustin and Jacob on to an eventual win.

Varsity Match Summary
JV Match Summary
It's a tiring beginning of the year. This morning, I got up at 4:45 to run to Kroger and get popcorn for a class lesson today. My back is sore with the tension of coaching two long tennis matches in 2 days. My brain is tired from trying to keep track of tennis schedule and teaching schedule.
I can't even imagine how it is for you guys who are actually playing in these matches.
I mention this because the word I'd use to describe most of our JV last night is "drained." Against Jimtown, we looked excited and ready. Our body language, even in our defeats, was positive and hopeful. Tonight against Northridge, we didn't really see that. And it's easy to understand why.
Despite that, there were definitely some good matches and moments across the JV. Some I'll cover below, but I'll just point out that Braden Bohn gave great fight. In a match against a older, stronger player, Braden kept in it. And at the end of the match, I challenged Braden to try a new strategy. He won 3 straight games when he put that strategy into action. I was inspired to see that effort.
Both our #2D and #4D came away with wins on the evening, and I was glad to see that for them. In some of the doubles losses, there was great pieces. Tyson had excellent net movement, Philip was stroking the shots well, Braydon stuck with it and stayed positive.
But in general, we're going to want to learn from this match, and figure out how to create more energy in the matches where we don't feel it. More about that tonight at practice!
Climbing Report (Great Moments of the Match)
For the most part, we'll be having 5 different great moments of the match. As we go up, these moments will more and more exemplify what I hope our team will be like. In other words, the 1st rung and 2nd rungs might just be cool moments, but the top rungs are examples of the type of tennis we should be moving toward.

Varsity Match Summary
As we got ready to play at Northridge, a cloud rolled in. One cloud. It flung a couple huge drops on the court, but looked like it would blow past, until it opened up and rained for 5 minutes. That was how our day went. At first, Jacob Woolace, who was going to play varsity singles tonight, had a sore ab muscle. Just one problem, so no problem. He'd stretch and everything would be okay :-) Maybe we'd have to switch him to doubles but...
Then the skies broke open and it started raining. Jacob didn't feel any better and the trainer said no playing. Will, who was slotted to play #3S, had a back spasm. So that took two singles players out of the lineup. Then, as the warmup ended, Caleb let me know that his back hurt so much he couldn't move well. And it was starting to seem like this was going to be a never ending bummer of a night.
And there's really no denying that our singles suffered from the injuries. Caleb looked nothing like his energetic and active match yesterday. With reduced movement, he couldn't get the same hits on the ball, struggled to split step, and couldn't capture a game. With Jacob and Will's absence, we moved the lineup around a bit and put others in their spot - and we didn't win very many games.
But there were still inspiring moments. Joel Yoder stepped in at #3S and played an exceptional match. Against a very talented freshman, who had every textbook shot in the book in his arsenal, Joel was able to keep points alive. Joel was able to be in control with his forehand. Joel showed incredible stick-to-itiveness.
But while the singles struggled, the doubles really came alive. Listening to my mantra of simple and aggressive tennis, Dustin and Jonathon rallied from 0-3 in the first set to truly take control of their match. With good hands, great lobs, and a wide array of other well placed shots, they fought their way to a 7-5, 6-2 win.
The #2D match was the highlight of the night, with Jonah and Nathan playing such solid doubles. I was so pleased to see them make adjustments to the way that I coached. Something we'll continue looking at in practice is our ability to adapt to situations, to change. Nathan and Jonah played a great first set, taking advantage of errors that the Northridge team made. So our Bruin #2D's just kept the ball in play and attacked the net. But in the second set, we started to make an abundance of errors. So going to a third set, we needed to mentally come back, be ready, start anew.
And we did, but then we had to battle a new enemy - nerves. As the match drew to its close, Jonah and Nathan were both feeling the nerves. But they listened to my advice for dealing with those nerves. When feeling under pressure, you have to get your muscles loose by moving. They did that, jumping around the baseline between points. Then, you have to imagine what you are going to do in that point, the awesome shot you will hit. Finally, you have to swing through those shots, even if you are nervous to do so. At the end, it was these things that pulled out the big games for Nathan and Jonah, with Nathan holding serve twice to seal a 7-5 victory in the third set.
So, we lost 3-2. But the last match to come off the courts was the inspiring #2D match, which left me feeling really good about where the team might go... and the example that Nathan and Jonah had just showed us as they climbed up the ladder.

1st Rung - Grit. Late in the third set, with the score tied at 3-3, Nathan and Jonah went down 15-40. In that game, Jonah got pushed way off the court to his right, and stroked the ball back over the net. But it was cut off by the Raider net man, sending it right back down the middle. Jonah sprinted to his left and lunged out to get the ball with an awkward backhand. It lobbed over the net man, and kept the point alive! Eventually, #2D won the point and kept the game alive. They then won the next three points in a row to take the lead, 4-3, in the final set. All kept alive by Jonah's grit and hustle.
2nd Rung - Improving strokes. I love to see the way that each JV player, especially the freshman, are starting to improve their strokes. I saw that most tonight in Joseph Mounsithiraj. Joseph's serve continue to gain consistency and power. His forehand continues to become more and more of a weapon. Both were used to great effect in his match tonight.
3rd Rung - Playing your best. Joel was suddenly promoted to #3S tonight, after playing #1DJV on Monday. Not that he didn't deserve to play there, but it was a sudden move. But rather than get freaked out, Joel simply committed to hitting his best shots. He was realistic about his match with me at the fence, and then worked his tail off to win points. After the match, he had nothing to be ashamed about. He played great, and could smile like crazy.
4th Rung - Confidence under pressure. Nathan and Jonah had plenty of pressure in their match. But I loved how they shook this off, literally bouncing up and down and shaking their arms. I loved how they stayed ready to win their match, rather than just hoping that the other team would do things to lose the match. A great example of this was in Nathan's second to last service game. Nathan struggled with double faults in the game, but was mixing them in with big serves. So Jonah wasn't doing much. But even in the pressure of the match, Jonah stayed ready. In the last two points of the game, Jonah put away volleys that hung across the net, and that helped give the Bruins the 5-3 lead in the match. It a great job staying focused when it was difficult.
5th Rung - Doing the honorable thing. In the #1D match, we were serving and were down 30-40. A long point ensued, and Logan Corns of Northridge was drawn off the right hand corner of the court where a ball from the #2D match had accidentally rolled. With correct judgment, Eric Firstenberger of the Raiders called a "let" as the ball was in his partner's way. However, the call came as Dustin was hitting the ball and Dustin hit the ball out - which would have meant that Northridge would have won the game. A "let" meant replaying the point. Jonathon thought he had heard the let call, so he asked. It would have been so easy to lie here, and say that no "let" call had been made. But Eric Firstenberger honestly said he had made the "let" call and that the point had to be replayed. Even when examples of outstanding leadership come from other teams, I think we should be inspired by them. It was a very upstanding move to be honest at a tempting time.
