A Detailed Analysis of Last Year's Freshman

Our freshman last year had a remarkable season. I was updated the website today with their individual pages that will keep track of their matches through the years. You can find them on the side bar or listed here.

Brandon Nguyen
Bryce Miller
Byeong Min Lim
Daniel Robles
Jackson King
Jacob Gonsalves
Lane Miller
Matthew Peters
Simon Hurst

However, in going through their stats I was throughly impressed. So I decided to throw together some statistical analysis. Here's a couple of freshman records.

INDIVIDUAL RECORDS

Top Ten: Most Wins in a Freshman Season
17 - Byeong Min Lim
16 - Simon Hurst
14 - Bryce Miller
13 - Lane Miller
12 - Hans Miller, Ben Mast
10 - Seth Krabill, Parth Patel, Blake Shetler, Sol Brenneman

Notice anything about this list? The top 4 all time for freshman wins were from last season. And the other people who dot the top of the list were "pretty" successful. Hans is going for most all time varsity victories this year. Ben Mast is one of 2 Bethany players to be named All-District. You know Seth, our all time varsity winning percentage leader (winning over 90% of his matches included an undefeated senior season). Parth was a three year varsity player. Blake had a 74% career varsity winning percentage. Sol Brenneman has just had a successful first full year at varsity and may have a super high winning percentage this year.

But, you might argue that this just looks at wins. This past year's freshman had more opportunities to rack up their wins than in past years because we played more JV matches. For example, we played the Jimtown and Fremont tournaments the past season, which we haven't always done. Well, one way to compare more fairly is to look at winning percentages.

Top Ten: Highest Winning Percentage in a Freshman Season (minimum 10 matches)
94.4% - Byeong Min Lim
87.5% - Bryce Miller
84.2% - Simon Hurst
83.3% - Blake Shetler
80.0% - Ben Mast
76.7% - Seth Krabill
72.7% - Luke Hostetter
72.2% - Lane Miller
70.5% - Hans Miller
66.7% - Russell Klassen

So when we break it down like that, not much changes. Lane moves a bit down the list, and Bryce and Simon trade places. But it's interesting to note that all the names stay in the top ten. Also, this list is a better indicator of future success. Blake, as said above, went 19-3 and 15-5 in his two varsity seasons. Ben Mast was All-District at #1 singles. Seth Krabill was undefeated at #2 singles that same season. Luke Hostetter was #1 singles for our Sectional title team. Hans you know. And Russell Klassen went 17-1 his senior season.

The other interesting thing to note is the positions played. Byeong, Ben, and Luke all played #1 singles for the JV their freshman year. Other high percentages, like Blake's and Russell's for example, were at #2 doubles JV. They would be comparable to Lane. But Bryce and Simon both played higher positions and had a higher winning percentage. Also, by the way, Jackson King was 66% winning percentage last year as a freshman, but only played 9 matches. Just below that was Brandon Nguyen at 65%. So two more close to the top ten!

What about what last year's freshman class accomplished as a class?

TEAM RECORDS

Highest Average Wins Per Player
9.8 wins - Class of 2011
9.0 wins - Class of 2017
7.8 wins - Class of 2014
6.5 wins - Class of 2007
4.8 wins - Class of 2012
4.6 wins - Class of 2015
4.3 wins - Class of 2016
4.0 wins - Class of 2009
2.1 wins - Class of 2010
1.2 wins - Class of 2013
0.0 wins - Class of 2008

Looking at all of the players in a particular freshman class, we can see that the average freshman doesn't win a lot of matches. In fact, overall the average number of wins for a freshman is just 5.1 wins. Last year's freshman class average was 4 higher than that. All but 2 of the freshman achieved that number of wins. As far as the average wins for the class, only higher than them was the class of 2011, which included Seth Krabill, Ben Mast, Kyle Miller and Russell Klassen - who as seniors went 18-3 as a team!

Highest Winning Percentage of a Freshman Class
73.6% - Class of 2017
70.9% - Class of 2011
58.3% - Class of 2009
57.6% - Class of 2012
48.1% - Class of 2007
47.0% - Class of 2014
45.5% - Class of 2015
37.1% - Class of 2016
36.6% - Class of 2010

This is a straight up representation of how successful teams have been. The 2011 class went 18-3 their senior year (losing all 3 of the matches 3-2 and unfortunately 2 of those to Fairfield, who won the Regional that season!) The 2009 class was our class that captured the Sectional Championship. The 2012 class was the other part of the 18-3 team as juniors. And look there at whose at the top. Last year's freshman, highest winning percentage of any class as freshman.

So what does this all mean? Nothing if the freshman class doesn't keep working. They are put in a good position, but it doesn't mean anything if they don't continue to take their improvement seriously.

But that's the good news right? We've continued to work throughout the offseason this year, hopefully it gets even more intense and focused in the coming season!

Daniel, Simon, Brandon, Lane, Bryce, Jackson, Jacob, Byeong - you are sophomores now. Follow up your initial success with confidence, effort and joy!

2/3 Review: Interesting Stuff

Interesting History
We have only had two other seasons where we've had as successful a start to the year as we've have this season. Those were in 2008 and in 2010. Let's do some comparison for fun, shall we?

Records after this weekend
2008: 10-4
2010: 11-1
2013: 9-2

As you can see, we've played less matches this season at this point than in others. That's because we used to be in a couple of varsity tournaments early in August. The season that we won the Sectional, we had already lost 4 matches. In 2010, which is the season we ended with the best record, we'd only lost once. This year comes in the middle. But what about the quality of those records?

Records against teams with winning records
2008: 3-4
2010: 3-1
2013: 3-2

Same number of wins in each of these seasons over teams with winning records. However, you can see that our schedule was strongest in 2008. This year we've had a decently strong schedule as well. Just a little under half of our matches have been against teams with winning records. Looking deeper into the win-loss record against teams with winning records...

Records against district ranked teams
2008: 1-4
2010: 0-1
2013: 0-1

So we can see how strong that 2008 schedule was. All 4 losses we had that season were against teams that were district ranked. No wonder that team was battle tested come the Sectional! What about close matches?

Records in 3-2 matches
2008: 1-3
2010: 1-1
2013: 2-2

So this year's team is the only one of the team's to pull out 2 "3-2"wins. We've also played under a decent amount of pressure. Which is good. Because Sectional will be under pressure :-) So what about Sectional?

Record against Sectional Opponents
2008: 3-0
2010: 3-0
2013: 3-0

Now, only in 2008 did we end up winning the Sectional. In 2010, we suffered a loss to Fairfield before the Sectional and also in the Sectional Semi-Final. So, how did these seasons end up?

Final records
2008: 15-5
2010: 18-3
2013: ? ? ?

In 2008, we didn't lose again in the regular season after this weekend of the season. We went on to win the Wayne Invitational (over Wabash, Wayne, and Elmhurst), defeat Penn (ranked 4th in the district) and win the Sectional. Our final loss of the year came to East Noble in the Regional.

In 2010, we lost to Fairfield. At tournaments, we got rained out of a very promising start at the Merrillville Invitational. We had defeated state-ranked Valparaiso's #2 doubles and advanced in 4 of 5 positions. We won the Wabash Invitational the next weekend. Then we got knocked out of the Sectional by Fairfield. Only 2 teams beat us all season, district ranked Columbia City and Sectional Champion Fairfield.

Where does 2013 go from here? Well, we've got 2 tournaments left to compete in. We've also got some challenging opponents. Marian, Blackhawk and Elkhart Central this week. Fairfield and Bremen next week. A couple more teams with winning records (Marian and Fairfield) and a couple more at the Wabash Tourney (Wabash and Taylor). We'll also have to keep getting better during practice. That's certainly what the 2008 team excelled at. As the season went on, they got better. They owed a lot of that to competition from their JV. See more on the JV below, but one more comparison before we go...

Season's after Matt's children are born...
1. Season after Gideon was born (12-14-07) --> 2008 Season --> 15-5, Wayne Champs, Sectional Champs

2. Season after Judah was born (6-12-10) --> 2010 Season --> 18-3, Wabash Champs

3. Season after Hosea was born (10-5-12) --> 2013 Season --> ? ? ?

I'm not saying, but I'm just saying :-)

Outstanding JV Start of the Season
Another awesome feature of 2008 was how good the JV was. While the upperclassmen were winning a Sectional, the JV was going undefeated. The backbone of that JV were the players who made up the 18-3 2010 varsity.

This year's JV team has 1 loss, but that one loss came without their top player (Byeong Min Lim) and they've since avenged that loss, as it was to NorthWood and Friday night we defeated NorthWood as a JV. Can't say we're undefeated, but we're doing pretty well. Looking down the road, it's interesting to start thinking about which one of these players will make up the next great Bruin varsity team. Look at some of the gaudy JV records as well (Ethan Lapp: 11-1, Bryce Miller: 10-1, Simon Hurst: 10-2, Byeong Min Lim: 9-1). The list goes on. The talent of the JV team is unlimited, if they match their talent with their work.

Interesting Stats
- Joel and Hans 9 straight match wins to start the season ties for the 9th longest winning streak in Bethany history.

- Sol Brenneman has won 6 straight matches. He's starting to find a rhythm as well. For the JV, the longest current winning streak is Ethan Lapp, who's won 10 straight.

- Several varsity players will have a chance of setting a record for most wins in first varsity season, or at least move up the list of leaders. Most likely is Sol and Landon.

- Speaking of first varsity seasons, as a freshman Jesse Amstutz won 4 varsity matches. He's already got 7 wins this season!

- Other big improvers? Parth Patel (from 6 --> 8), Landon (from 6 JV wins --> 8 varsity wins), Ryan Duckworth (0 wins because of injury --> 9 this season), Ethan Lapp (8 --> 11), Jack Erlacher (4 --> 7) and Paul Krabill (1 --> 3)!

- Sol Brenneman has a JV record of most wins in a season (13), Ethan Lapp is only 2 matches behind tying that record and Bryce Miller and Simon Hurst just one behind him.

- Abe Thorne has played 4 matches so far against players who will fight for All-District status. They make up 4 of his 6 losses.

- The most matches ever won by a Bethany #1 doubles team is 15. Joel and Hans have 9. They'll certainly have a chance to get to 15 in the next couple of weeks, if they are up for the challenge.

- Next week will be the busiest week of our schedule, as both varsity and JV players will have chances to play 6 matches in 6 days. This is because both teams travel to tournaments (that they've never won) on Saturday, September 21. Go for trophies!

1/3 Review - Facts and Figures

With the first two weeks of the season now complete, we are a third of the way through are competition season. We're also about a third of the way through our dual matches as well, so it seems like a good time for a little review.

Random Facts
- Joel and Hans have now won 19 matches together as doubles partners. Their record together is 19-5.

- After winning 21 matches from the #1 singles position last year, we've already lost 5 at that position this year, however . . .

- Abe Thorne lost his first 4 matches last year, and 4 of his first 5, before going on a 13 match winning streak. He's lost 4 of his first 5 this year as well, time for a winning streak?

- Our #1 singles JV position, however, has been dominant. It is the only position we have not lost in our 9 match season.

- On our entire team of 24 players, only 4 players have losing individual records. That's incredible!

- We defeated Northridge this year as a varsity and tied as a JV. This is the first time ever that we have not lost either JV or varsity to Northridge in the same season.

- We've defeated the two Sectional opponents we've played so far, Jimtown and Goshen.

- We've competed against 2 district ranked opponents so far this season: Angola (scrimmage) and Concord.

- Parth has as many wins already this season as he did in the entire season last year.

- The JV team's start to the season is the best since 2008, when the JV team went undefeated.

- Daniel Robles has not played with the same doubles partner in any of his matches, he keeps having to play with new partners.

- Paul Krabill won his first and only singles match of his career against Goshen.

- When we played Goshen, Seth Krabill's (our assistant coach's) little brother, Evan, played for the Redskins.
