Moment of Beauty - Northridge

Varsity:
As much as I enjoyed Luke's "c'mon!" points and several of Jeremy's overheads landing in the trees after they were smashed into the court, I think that the most beautiful point of the evening happened on Court 5. Ben Mast played a beauty of a point in the third set that I want to remember. With patience, Ben played a rally of 8-10 shots, keeping his opponent, Dylan Pieri, back deep in the court. Ben finally was able to take a backhand deep into Pieri's backhand, and Ben approached the net behind it. Pieri lifted a lob that forced Ben into a step back, but he rifled the overhead straight back with a lot of pace. Pieri got a racquet on the ball, but only popped it back up, high and short. Ben took a step in and pounded the second overhead crosscourt. The combination of patience and power defined smaggession for me. Thus the point's beauty.

JV:
Russell Klassen must be overlooked by most of his opponents. And I don't mean literally, although that is possible. As Andrew said last night, nothing is more enjoyable then watching Russell jaunt merrily about the court and hammer an opponent twice his size and two years his elder. Last night it wasn't one moment, but one shot of Russell's that was continuously beautiful, his two-handed forehand. Over and over he pounded the ball crosscourt with curling topspin and deceptive power. Deceptive power, I like that as a description for the Little Red One.
