Tuesday Tennis Tip: Backhand Tidbit

TTT #5: Backhand Tidbit

Struggling with your backhand? Can't figure out just what you are supposed to be doing? Let me be short and sweet, here's the best piece of advice I ever got about my backhand, from college coach and tennis pro Bill Maddock.

"It's not a backhand. It's a left-handed forehand. Your right hand is just along for the ride."

Who has a very good backhand on our team? Mikey. Who played left-handed for the whole preseason? Mikey. It's not a coincidence.

Have a fun inauguration day!

  1. I kept wondering during the season if Mikey and I should have played opposite sides this year, since I always played backhand, but I don't know if you want the strong backhand on the left side to get the cross-court ball or the right to cover the middle.

  2. You probably should have switched sides, but were comfortable and successful in the formation you had. Didn't seem like a necessity. Plus, the person who plays backhand is often returning with the game on the line (ad-in or ad-out), so I usually like to have a senior there.
